When discussed among those unfamiliar with the wonders of La Hacienda, the immediate assumption is bound to be that it is a Mexican restaurant. For some reason, it is frequently assumed to be a “dive.” It is neither. La Hacienda is actually a hidden gem near the Somerville/Cambridge line that features the finest in Italian fare, not the least of which is their excellent pizza.
“La Hacienda,” roughly translated from Italian to English, means “La Hacienda.” Lost in translation is the implied care and old world service that comes with every meal here. I do live within neglible walking distance of the restaurant, but the Hacienda staff couldn’t possibly know that; no, they simply treat everyone like locals who stop by on a regular basis.
All that atmosphere (which the restaurant has to spare) would be nothing without great food, and La Hacienda’s food is great. The pizza features a thin crust and a nice balance of cheese, sauce, and oil. Though I haven’t examined the kitchen facilities (yet…), the crust gives a definite suggestion of real brick oven firing. A small pizza easily satisfies two people, especially since all customers are treated to delicious bread to warm up (and since it is difficult to keep from ordering a side salad or appetizer such as mozzarella sticks). All told, this is one of my favorite pizzerias.
